Academic Integrity

A Message From the Principal

As we begin our school year, it is an excellent opportunity to remind students that their school work is required to be their own. We ask for the support of families and caregivers in helping CVA staff to uphold this critical standard of academic integrity. This year, we are already seeing work that is not academically honest, that was completed by Artificial Intelligence (AI), or has been plagiarized.

At Centennial Virtual Academy, our priority is making sure students learn by completing their own work, and we support every student in that goal. When a student receives their diploma, it must mean that they have earned it by learning content and skills to help prepare them for their future.

Often students turn to AI or academic dishonesty when they do not understand or are stuck or overwhelmed. We want to help our students when they feel like this! We don’t expect perfection. When CVA teachers read students’ authentic work, it gives us a better opportunity to help your student academically grow, identify any knowledge gaps, and best support their learning.

What can you do as a Caregiver?
Communicate your expectation that your student does not use AI or plagiarize.
Talk to your student about the possible consequences of academic dishonesty (see below.)
Talk to your student about what class they are struggling with, and encourage them to ask for help.
Respond if a teacher contacts you about an academic dishonesty concern.

Before the start of the course and/or upon enrolling in Centennial Virtual Academy, students/guardians will read and acknowledge (with their Advisor) the CVA Student Electronic Use Agreement. This agreement is in addition to all Centennial School District Electronic Use and Student Conduct policies.

Consequences for Academic Dishonesty May Include:

  1. Reduced/no score on the assignment/s until they are redone
  2. Required discussion with teacher
  3. Parent/guardian contacted
  4. Reset all assignments in Edgenuity
  5. Not awarded credit for assignments or classes
  6. Required meeting with student counselor, CHS/CVA staff and/or principal
  7. Requirement to come in person for daily work and/or assessments.
  8. Discussion about continued enrollment in Centennial Virtual Academy
  9. Removed from valedictorian or salutatorian status

CVA Teachers will be placing emphasis this year on increased demonstration of learning from all students. This may include, but is not limited to: increasing the weight of summative, unit, and or final exams, requiring the completing assessments onsite and/or synchronously with Centennial staff, discussion based assessments (cameras on), and/or portfolio/project based demonstration of learning. This is to help us to confirm that learning is happening, students understand what they are learning and are ready for their next class.

Please take an active role as students and caregivers. We encourage you to reach out to myself, your CVA advisor, or counselor, with any questions you have.
